Friedrich Magnus Schwerd (1792-1871) was a German astronomer and mathematician. Schwerd dedicated himself to the gymnasium classroom, turning down several invitations to university professorships. He also contributed to geodetic surveying and astronomical research in Bavaria.
This is an early work on the diffraction of light, built on Fresnel’s fundamental contributions to the wave theory, but also on the experimental work of Fraunhofer.
