About the Author
Bernhardus Varenius (1622-1650) was raised around Hamburg and studied at Königsberg and Amsterdam. In Amsterdam he knew navigators, cartographers and geographers. His few years of scholarship formed the geographical and geophysical imagination for generations of students.
About the Book
This first edition of a classic 17th-century geography was donated to the Niels Bohr Library by Thomas W. Sills. This text developed a new geography based on empirical discovery and measurement. It connected geography to physical principles -- subjects now part of geophysics.
